Building a collaborative, cohesive culture is one of the single most important responsibilities of a manager. A positive work culture produces beneficial employee and work outcomes, such as improved teamwork, increased productivity, increased creativity, and increased loyalty. It is also important for attracting and retaining highly skilled staff. Despite these benefits, every team experiences some degree of dysfunction, from hiding resources to ongoing turf wars to backbiting and backstabbing to gossiping and rumours. Every dysfunction has a direct impact on a team’s performance and produces unhealthy conflict, reduces productivity, and takes the focus off results and high performance.

Almost every manager has encountered dysfunctional team dynamics at some point in their career. When team members frequently argue, or battle through passive-aggression, or condescending insults it affects everyone, including the manager. Allowing dysfunction to fester will only cultivate an unfavourable employee experience and can threaten to tear apart entire teams. The good news is that there are strategies that managers can employ to fix the dysfunction in teams.

  • Developing a plan for making a smooth transition when taking over a new department
  • Diagnosing the root causes of team dysfunction
  • How to avoid being a casualty of a toxic work environment
  • Recognizing the glaring signs – at an early stage - that a toxic environment is forming around you before it turns grave
  • Common types of difficult and disruptive employees (i.e., the bully, the steamroller, the know-it-all, passive aggressive, martyr, poor performer, etc) who sabotage the team’s - including your own - success and what to do about them
  • Tips for promptly and decisively dealing with toxic employees

  • Dysfunctional Team Dynamics
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Management Style
  • Difficult and Disruptive Employees

Research shows that nearly 70% of every ten people who have ever worked on a team, at one point or another have been part of a dysfunctional team.
